CHANGE of THEORY
There are 8.8 million people (about half the population of New York) in New York City and 1 out of every 83 of those are displaced or without permanent housing. Thats about 100000 total. 4000 of those living on our city subways and about another 2000 in parks and under paths around the city. As a matter of fact, after Covid homelessness has soared.
As a teen, I was faced with living on the streets of Atlanta, and it was only when I found myself in the shelter with my child did, I then began to realize that it was an ancestorial chain. Who would have ever thought the “City of Lights” would be full of inflated housing costs, desert food areas, and lack of mental health and healing resources for our black and brown communities. It would only be so long before we would have to witness it run through the Land of the Free. The one thing I learned from this experience right in Brownsville Brooklyn NY, is that first I had to heal from the Trauma of being without shelter. Once I was able to transform the way I saw myself and my situation I was able to navigate my family into stable housing.

So now we start at ground zero we say that because there is nowhere to go from here but up. Sons of the Sun has strategically, with much thought, research, lived experience and hands on with the people and families of those who are temporarily displaced. I say temporary because that's what I tell the families. You have to believe that you will make it out, or should I say in. These workshops allow those to express their trauma that burdens them in a safe space, while also teaching coping skills while navigating through life. Not only do they transform ways of thinking, they also realize I am not alone in this fight. The bonds that are built through shared experiences are often lifelong.

How will we get these things accomplished?
Through Transformative Thinking. How you think is how you live. Shared experience is also a key component to the core of the healing process. Your experience could change how someone else relates to a situation, person or how you view yourself. If I can do it, so will you! Envision having all the coping skills you need to be successful and free from trauma.
